About This Template
The Butterfly Spread Calculator Excel Template provides a ready-to-use financial model for analyzing three-leg option strategies. Whether you're an options trader constructing neutral positions, a portfolio manager seeking defined-risk setups, or a finance student learning multi-leg spreads, this spreadsheet delivers professional-grade calculations with full formula transparency.
What You Can Calculate
This template computes key butterfly spread metrics:
- Net Debit per Share โ Cost to enter the butterfly (can be debit or credit)
- Total Cost โ Total cash outlay for all contracts
- Max Profit โ Maximum gain when stock closes at middle strike (K2)
- Max Loss / Min Profit โ Worst-case at expiration (adapts for credit butterflies)
- Lower Breakeven โ Price below which you start losing money
- Upper Breakeven โ Price above which you start losing money
- Risk/Reward Ratio โ Max loss divided by max profit
- Wing Widths โ Left and right wing distances for symmetry check
Required Inputs
To use this calculator, you'll need:
- Lower Strike (K1) โ Where you buy 1 call (lower wing)
- Middle Strike (K2) โ Where you sell 2 calls (body)
- Upper Strike (K3) โ Where you buy 1 call (upper wing)
- K1 Call Premium โ Premium paid per share for the K1 long call
- K2 Call Premium โ Premium received per share for each K2 short call
- K3 Call Premium โ Premium paid per share for the K3 long call
- Number of Butterflies โ Each spread = 100 shares per leg
Methodology
This models a long call butterfly: buy 1 call at K1, sell 2 calls at K2, buy 1 call at K3. Net debit = K1 premium - 2 x K2 premium + K3 premium. Max profit occurs when stock closes exactly at K2 at expiration. Breakevens are calculated as K1 + Net Debit (lower) and 2K2 - K1 - Net Debit (upper). Warning messages flag unequal wing widths (broken-wing butterflies).
Assumptions
- All options share the same expiration date
- Each contract covers 100 shares
- Strikes must be in ascending order: K1 < K2 < K3
- Premiums are per-share values (not per-contract)
- Results assume holding to expiration
- For educational purposes only โ not financial advice
Frequently Asked Questions
This Excel template focuses on expiration payoff analysis using known option premiums. For Black-Scholes pricing with IV, use the online calculator to compute premiums, then enter them here. This approach gives you full control over pricing assumptions and simplifies the spreadsheet for scenario analysis.
Copy the Calculator sheet (right-click tab > Move or Copy > check "Create a copy") to create additional scenarios. You can then adjust strikes and premiums on each sheet to compare different butterfly configurations.
When you enter a butterfly for a net credit (negative net debit), the worst-case outcome at expiration is still a profit. The template automatically relabels "Max Loss" to "Min Profit" in these credit butterfly scenarios.
