About This Template
Analyze credit risk with professional-grade leverage and coverage ratios. This Debt Coverage Ratios Calculator Excel template provides the same calculations used by credit analysts, lenders, and private equity professionals to assess a company's debt capacity and financial health.
What You Can Calculate
The template calculates five key credit metrics from your inputs:
- Gross Leverage (Debt/EBITDA) - Total debt burden relative to earnings, the primary metric in most credit agreements
- Net Leverage ((Debt-Cash)/EBITDA) - Adjusted for cash reserves, commonly used when companies have significant cash balances
- Interest Coverage (EBITDA/Interest) - Measures ability to service interest payments from operating cash flow
- FCCR (Fixed Charge Coverage Ratio) - More conservative coverage metric that accounts for maintenance capex
- Credit Health - Automated classification as Investment Grade, Leveraged, or Distressed based on industry thresholds
Required Inputs
Enter five financial metrics (all in millions):
- Total Debt - All interest-bearing debt including bank loans and bonds
- Unrestricted Cash - Cash available for debt paydown
- EBITDA (LTM) - Last twelve months operating earnings
- Cash Interest Expense - Annual interest payments on all debt
- Maintenance Capex - Required capital expenditures to maintain operations
Methodology
The template applies standard leveraged finance formulas: Gross Leverage = Total Debt / EBITDA, Interest Coverage = EBITDA / Interest Expense. The Credit Health classification uses industry conventions - Investment Grade requires leverage at or below 3.0x with coverage at or above 3.0x, while Distressed triggers include FCCR below 1.0x or leverage above 7.0x.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Uses LTM EBITDA as proxy for normalized operating cash flow
- Cash assumed fully unrestricted (no trapped cash adjustment)
- Single-period snapshot analysis, not a multi-year projection
- For educational purposes only - not financial advice
Frequently Asked Questions
Four key ratios: Gross Leverage (Debt/EBITDA), Net Leverage ((Debt-Cash)/EBITDA), Interest Coverage (EBITDA/Interest), and FCCR (Fixed Charge Coverage Ratio). Plus a Credit Health classification that categorizes the profile as Investment Grade, Leveraged, or Distressed based on industry thresholds.
The template applies leveraged finance conventions: Investment Grade requires gross leverage at or below 3.0x with interest coverage at or above 3.0x. Distressed triggers include FCCR below 1.0x, leverage above 7.0x, or interest coverage below 1.5x. Everything else is classified as Leveraged.
