About This Template
Calculate basic and diluted earnings per share under GAAP standards with this Diluted EPS Calculator Excel template. Whether you're analyzing equity compensation impact, preparing financial statements, or evaluating convertible securities, this template automates the Treasury Stock Method and If-Converted Method calculations per ASC 260.
What You Can Calculate
This template computes eight key outputs for comprehensive EPS analysis:
- Basic EPS - Net income available to common shareholders divided by weighted average shares
- Diluted EPS - EPS including all dilutive securities that pass anti-dilution tests
- Dilution Amount & Percentage - The reduction from basic to diluted EPS
- Treasury Stock Net Shares - Incremental shares from in-the-money options
- After-Tax Interest Add-Back - Interest savings from convertible bond conversion
- Dilutiveness Indicators - Whether options and bonds are dilutive or anti-dilutive
Required Inputs
Enter these values in the blue input cells:
- Income Statement Data - Net Income, Preferred Dividends, Weighted Average Common Shares
- Stock Option Details - Options Outstanding, Exercise Price, Average Market Price
- Convertible Bond Terms - Face Value, Interest Rate, Shares on Conversion
- Tax Rate - Corporate tax rate for after-tax interest calculations
Methodology
The template follows ASC 260 requirements for diluted EPS:
- Treasury Stock Method for options: Net Shares = Options - (Proceeds / Market Price)
- If-Converted Method for bonds: Add back after-tax interest, add conversion shares
- Sequential Anti-Dilution Testing per ASC 260-10-45-18 through 45-20
Assumptions & Limitations
- Single reporting period calculation (no interim adjustments)
- One option tranche and one convertible bond issue
- Weighted average shares pre-computed by user
- Bonds assumed issued at par for full period
- Does not cover RSUs, convertible preferred, or two-class method
