About This Template

Compare four depreciation methods side by side with this Depreciation Calculator Excel template. Whether you're analyzing asset depreciation for financial reporting, coursework, or investment analysis, this template calculates Straight-Line, Double Declining Balance, Sum-of-Years'-Digits, and Units of Production depreciation instantly.

What You Can Calculate

This template provides comprehensive depreciation analysis across multiple methods:

  • Straight-Line - Annual depreciation, accumulated depreciation, and ending book value for any selected year
  • Double Declining Balance - Year 1 depreciation, accumulated depreciation, and book value using the 200% declining balance rate
  • Sum-of-Years'-Digits - Year fraction, annual depreciation, accumulated depreciation, and book value with full year selection
  • Units of Production - Per-unit depreciation rate and annual depreciation based on actual usage

Required Inputs

Enter six values to calculate all depreciation outputs:

  • Asset Cost - Original purchase price or acquisition cost
  • Salvage Value - Estimated residual value at end of useful life
  • Useful Life - Expected life of the asset in years (1-50)
  • Total Estimated Units - Lifetime production capacity (for Units of Production method)
  • Units Produced This Year - Actual units produced in the analysis period
  • Selected Year - Which year of the asset's life to analyze

Methodology

The template uses standard GAAP book depreciation formulas. Straight-Line spreads the depreciable base evenly: (Cost - Salvage) / Life. DDB applies twice the straight-line rate to the declining book value. SYD uses a decreasing fraction based on remaining years divided by the sum of years' digits. Units of Production divides the depreciable base by total estimated units to derive a per-unit rate.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Full first-year depreciation (no half-year or mid-quarter convention)
  • Asset placed in service at beginning of Year 1
  • DDB section shows Year 1 values only (multi-year DDB with switch-to-SL requires the online calculator)
  • Book depreciation only - not MACRS or tax depreciation

Frequently Asked Questions

DDB calculations depend on prior years' book values and include complex switch-to-SL logic that varies by year. This template provides Year 1 DDB values and the core formulas. For full multi-year DDB schedules with automatic switching, use the online calculator which generates complete schedules.

This template calculates book depreciation under GAAP methods. For U.S. tax purposes, most assets use MACRS (Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System) with different recovery periods and conventions. Consult a tax professional for tax depreciation.

Straight-Line and Sum-of-Years'-Digits fully respond to your year selection, showing expense, accumulated depreciation, and book value for that year. DDB shows Year 1 values only. Units of Production calculates single-year depreciation based on units produced.
