About This Template
Compare two exchange rate forecasting methods side-by-side with this professional Excel template. Whether you are evaluating forward rates against fundamental analysis or testing any two forecasting approaches, this spreadsheet calculates all four standard accuracy metrics automatically.
What You Can Calculate
Enter your actual exchange rates alongside forecasts from two methods, and instantly see:
- MAE (Mean Absolute Error) - Average forecast miss in rate terms
- RMSE (Root Mean Squared Error) - Penalizes large errors more heavily
- MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) - Error as a percentage of actual rates
- Forecast Bias - Detects systematic over- or under-forecasting
- Winner Determination - Automatically identifies the more accurate method by MAE
Required Inputs
For each of 4 forecast periods, you will need:
- The actual (realized) exchange rate
- Method 1 forecast for that period
- Method 2 forecast for that period
The template comes pre-loaded with EUR/USD example data you can replace with your own currency pair.
Methodology
This template implements the standard forecast error formulas used in international finance textbooks:
- MAE = (1/n) x Sum of |Forecast - Actual|
- RMSE = Square root of ((1/n) x Sum of (Forecast - Actual) squared)
- Bias = (1/n) x Sum of (Forecast - Actual), where positive means over-forecast
Assumptions and Limitations
- Fixed 4-period layout (use online calculator for 2-52 periods)
- Equal weighting across all periods (no time-decay)
- Ex-post evaluation only - does not generate forecasts
- No adjustment for transaction costs or bid-ask spreads
