About This Template
Project your HSA growth and quantify the triple tax advantage with this HSA Savings Calculator Excel template. Whether you're planning retirement healthcare funding, comparing HSA vs. taxable investing, or modeling different contribution scenarios, this spreadsheet provides the analysis you need.
What You Can Calculate
This template computes 10 key outputs to help you understand the full value of your Health Savings Account:
- Annual Tax Savings - Federal, FICA, and state tax savings from your contributions
- Projected HSA Balance - Your future HSA value with tax-free compounding
- Taxable Account Comparison - What the same contributions would yield in a taxable account
- HSA Advantage - Dollar and percentage difference showing the triple tax benefit
- Total Tax Savings - Cumulative tax savings over your projection period
Required Inputs
Enter your personal financial details to generate customized projections:
- Current HSA balance and annual contribution amounts (yours and employer's)
- Coverage type (individual or family) for IRS limit warnings
- Federal marginal tax rate and state tax rate
- Expected investment return and projection timeframe
- Annual medical expense withdrawals
- Whether contributions are via payroll deduction (affects FICA savings)
Methodology
The calculator uses the ordinary annuity future value formula: FV = PV(1+r)^n + PMT * [(1+r)^n - 1] / r. For the taxable comparison, it applies an after-tax return rate: r_at = r * (1 - marginal_rate). All balances are floored at zero to prevent negative projections.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Contributions and withdrawals occur at year-end (ordinary annuity convention)
- Tax rates and investment returns remain constant over the projection period
- FICA rate is 7.65% (applies only to payroll deduction contributions)
- Simplified tax drag model for taxable account comparison
- For educational purposes only - not tax or financial advice
