About This Template
Calculate your life insurance coverage needs with this professional Excel template using the DIME method — Debt, Income, Mortgage, and Education. Whether you are a financial planner, insurance advisor, or individual assessing your family protection needs, this Life Insurance Needs Calculator Excel template provides a clear, editable framework for determining adequate coverage.
What You Can Calculate
This template breaks down your coverage needs into five components:
- D — Outstanding Debts: Credit cards, student loans, auto loans, and other non-mortgage obligations
- I — Income Replacement: Present value of income your family needs, calculated using an ordinary annuity formula with your specified discount rate
- M — Mortgage Balance: Remaining principal on your home loan
- E — Education Needs: Total education funding for your children
- Final Expenses: Funeral, burial, and estate settlement costs
The template then calculates your total coverage need, compares it against existing insurance and liquid assets, and recommends a policy size rounded to the nearest $50,000.
Required Inputs
Enter 10 values to complete your analysis: annual income to replace, years of replacement needed, discount rate (typically 2-5%), outstanding debts, mortgage balance, number of children, education cost per child, final expenses, existing life insurance, and liquid assets earmarked for your family.
Methodology
Income replacement uses the present value of an ordinary annuity formula. This converts future income needs to today's dollars based on your expected investment return. The recommended policy size uses CEILING to round up to practical policy increments.
Assumptions and Limitations
- All values are in today's dollars (no inflation adjustment)
- Discount rate represents real (inflation-adjusted) expected return
- Education costs are total per child, not annual tuition
- Does not account for Social Security survivor benefits or other income sources
- For educational purposes only — not financial advice
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Simply change any input value and all calculations update instantly. You can compare scenarios by copying the Calculator sheet (right-click tab, Move or Copy, Create a copy) to test different income replacement periods, discount rates, or coverage amounts side by side.
The Coverage Status output will show Surplus with the amount you are over-covered by, and Recommended Policy Size will show $0. This helps you decide whether to reduce premiums or keep the extra coverage as a buffer.
The discount rate converts future income needs to present value using an ordinary annuity formula. Enter the rate as a percentage (e.g., 3 for 3%). A lower rate is more conservative and results in higher coverage recommendations; a higher rate assumes more aggressive investment returns.
