About This Template
Calculate operational risk capital requirements using the Basel II Basic Indicator Approach (BIA) with this ready-to-use Excel template. Ideal for risk analysts, finance students, and CFA/FRM candidates who need a hands-on tool for practicing regulatory capital calculations.
What You Can Calculate
This template computes the BIA capital charge using your gross income data:
- Op-Risk Capital Charge โ The required capital under Basel II BIA (Average GI ร 15%)
- Positive GI Years โ Count of years included in the average (excludes zero/negative years)
- Average Gross Income โ Mean of positive GI years only
- Total Positive GI โ Sum of gross income from qualifying years
Required Inputs
Enter gross income for three consecutive years in millions. Gross income equals net interest income plus net non-interest income. Years with zero or negative GI are automatically excluded from the calculation per Basel rules.
Methodology
The Basic Indicator Approach applies a fixed 15% multiplier (alpha) to the average annual gross income over the previous three years. Only years with positive gross income are included: KBIA = (Sum of positive GI) / n ร 15%, where n is the count of positive years.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Alpha coefficient is fixed at 15% per Basel Committee mandate
- Years with GI โค 0 are excluded from both numerator and denominator
- For educational purposes only โ not for regulatory compliance
