About This Template
Calculate private equity returns instantly with this MOIC Calculator Excel template. Whether you're evaluating a single deal or preparing LP reporting, this spreadsheet computes Multiple on Invested Capital, realized and unrealized multiples, total gain/loss, and implied CAGR from your inputs.
What You Can Calculate
Enter your investment details and the template automatically calculates:
- MOIC (Multiple on Invested Capital) - Total value generated per dollar invested, the core PE return metric
- Realized Multiple - Cash already returned divided by invested capital (analogous to DPI at fund level)
- Unrealized Multiple - Current NAV divided by invested capital (analogous to RVPI)
- Total Gain/(Loss) - Dollar profit or loss on the investment
- Implied CAGR - Annualized return approximation for quick IRR comparison
Required Inputs
The template needs four values:
- Invested Capital - Total equity capital deployed across all tranches
- Distributions Received - Cash returned to investors to date
- Residual Value (NAV) - Current fair value of unrealized holdings
- Holding Period - Years from first investment to measurement date
Methodology
MOIC is calculated as (Distributions + Residual Value) / Invested Capital. The Implied CAGR uses the formula MOIC^(1/Years) - 1, which approximates annualized returns assuming single start and end dates. For deals with multiple cash flows at different times, use a full IRR calculation for precise annualized returns.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Results are gross of management fees, carried interest, and fund expenses
- All inputs are equity values net of debt
- Residual value is taken at face value with no illiquidity discount
- Implied CAGR treats all capital as deployed on day one
- Models one deal in isolation - fund-level returns require aggregation
Frequently Asked Questions
This template models one deal at a time. To track multiple investments, copy the Calculator sheet for each deal. You can create a summary sheet that aggregates the individual MOIC values, but note that fund-level TVPI requires capital-weighting across deals.
This template calculates gross deal-level MOIC before fees. Fund quarterly reports show net returns after management fees, carried interest, and expenses. Converting between gross and net requires detailed fee calculations that vary by fund structure. Use this template to understand gross deal economics; consult your fund administrator for net LP returns.
Yes. Enter total cumulative invested capital across all tranches in the Invested Capital cell. The template does not track individual round timing, so the Implied CAGR treats all capital as deployed at the start date. For precise timing, use an IRR model.
