About This Template
Calculate the true compounded average return of your investments with this professional Geometric Mean Return Excel template. Unlike simple averages that can overstate performance, the geometric mean accounts for compounding effects and volatility drag, giving you an accurate picture of real investment growth over time.
What You Can Calculate
This template provides four key metrics for analyzing multi-period investment returns:
- Geometric Mean Return - The true compounded average return that reflects actual wealth accumulation
- Arithmetic Mean Return - The simple average for comparison purposes
- Cumulative Return - Total return over all periods combined
- Volatility Drag - The performance cost of return fluctuations (the gap between arithmetic and geometric mean)
Required Inputs
Enter your period-by-period returns as percentages:
- Number of Periods - Select 2 to 10 periods for your analysis
- Period Returns - Enter each period's return (e.g., 10 for +10%, -5 for -5%)
The template handles both positive and negative returns. Common use cases include analyzing annual stock returns, quarterly fund performance, or monthly portfolio results.
Methodology
The geometric mean is calculated using the standard formula: G = [(1+Rโ)(1+Rโ)...(1+Rโ)]^(1/n) - 1. This multiplicative approach captures compounding effects that simple averaging misses. Volatility drag is computed as the difference between arithmetic and geometric means, approximately equal to half the variance of returns.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Returns are entered as percentages (10 means 10%)
- All periods are assumed equal length
- Returns of -100% or worse are not supported (total loss makes geometric mean undefined)
- Template supports up to 10 periods; can be extended by unprotecting the sheet
Frequently Asked Questions
Excel works best with fixed cell references. The template provides 10 period inputs which covers most practical use cases. Select the number of active periods from the dropdown, and formulas automatically exclude unused periods from calculations.
For analyses requiring more than 10 periods: (1) Edit the Number of Periods dropdown validation to allow values above 10, (2) Add more Period Return input rows below Period 10, (3) Extend the output formulas by adding more IF() terms following the existing pattern. The Calculator sheet is already unprotected for editing.
