About This Template
Perform t-tests and F-tests for regression coefficients directly in Excel. This Hypothesis Testing Regression Calculator Excel template lets you test individual coefficient significance (t-test), joint significance of multiple variables (F-test exclusion restrictions), or overall model significance (Overall F-test) โ all with live formulas you can audit and customize.
What You Can Calculate
This template computes all the key statistics for regression hypothesis testing:
- Test Statistics โ t-statistics for individual coefficients, F-statistics for joint tests
- p-values โ Two-sided and one-sided p-values for t-tests, right-tail p-values for F-tests
- Critical Values โ At your chosen significance level (1%, 5%, or 10%)
- Confidence Intervals โ Two-sided intervals for coefficient estimates at your chosen alpha
- Decision โ Clear "Reject H0" or "Fail to Reject H0" based on your inputs
Required Inputs
What you need from your regression output:
- For t-tests: Coefficient estimate, standard error, null hypothesis value (usually 0), sample size, and number of regressors
- For F-tests: R-squared values from unrestricted and restricted models (exclusion test) or just the model R-squared (overall test)
Methodology
The template uses exact t and F distributions assuming Classical Linear Model conditions (MLR.1-MLR.6). The t-statistic is computed as t = (b - ฮฒโ) / se(b), and F-statistics follow the standard formulas for exclusion restrictions and overall significance tests per Wooldridge Introductory Econometrics.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Assumes homoskedastic OLS standard errors (not robust/clustered)
- Requires MLR.6 (normality) for exact distributions in finite samples
- Does not compute the regression coefficients themselves โ enter those from your statistical software
Frequently Asked Questions
Use the Test Type dropdown at the top of the Calculator sheet. Select t-test for individual coefficient tests, F-test (Exclusion) for testing if a subset of variables can be excluded, or Overall F-test for testing joint significance of all regressors.
Yes. When using t-test mode, the Alternative Hypothesis dropdown lets you choose between two-sided, one-sided greater, or one-sided less. The p-value and critical value automatically adjust based on your selection.
For t-tests, you need the coefficient estimate and its standard error from your regression output. For F-tests, you need the R-squared values from your unrestricted and restricted models. You also need sample size (n) and number of regressors (k).
A fully interactive financial model with live Excel formulas, an Instructions sheet with usage guide, and a Formula Reference sheet with variable definitions and model assumptions. All formulas are visible and editable.
Microsoft Excel 2016 or later. The template uses standard Excel formulas only โ no macros, VBA, or add-ins required.
Yes. All cells are fully editable. You can modify any formula, add your own calculations, change formatting, or integrate the model into your existing spreadsheets.
The online calculator runs in your browser for quick calculations. This Excel template gives you a portable, offline financial model you can customize, save, share with colleagues, and integrate into your own analysis.
