About This Template
Download this Heteroskedasticity Test Calculator Excel Template to diagnose non-constant variance in your OLS regression residuals. Run Breusch-Pagan tests, White tests, or compare robust vs OLS standard errors โ all with live Excel formulas that update automatically.
What You Can Calculate
This template supports three diagnostic modes:
- Breusch-Pagan Test โ Computes the BP test statistic (n ร Rยฒ), chi-squared critical value, and p-value to detect heteroskedasticity under normality assumptions
- White Test โ More general test that does not require normality, using auxiliary regression on levels, squares, and cross-products
- Robust SE Comparison โ Compare heteroskedasticity-consistent standard errors to OLS standard errors and see how inference changes
Required Inputs
For BP/White tests: sample size (n), number of regressors (k) or auxiliary terms (q), auxiliary R-squared from your residual regression, and significance level. For robust SE mode: your OLS and robust standard errors plus the coefficient estimate.
Methodology
The Breusch-Pagan and White tests use the LM principle: test statistic = n ร Rยฒ_aux follows a chi-squared distribution with k (BP) or q (White) degrees of freedom under the null hypothesis of homoskedasticity. Reject Hโ when the test statistic exceeds the critical value.
Assumptions and Limitations
- BP test assumes normally distributed errors (sensitive to non-normality)
- White test is more general but requires more degrees of freedom
- Robust SE mode compares pre-computed standard errors; it does not calculate HC estimates
- Chi-squared approximation may be unreliable for small samples (n less than 30)
Frequently Asked Questions
The Excel template lets you save your heteroskedasticity test results alongside your regression analysis, include them in reports, and work offline. You can also add custom notes and extend the template with additional diagnostic tests for your specific research project.
Yes. Duplicate the Calculator sheet (right-click tab > Move or Copy > Create a copy) to test different specifications or compare BP vs White results side-by-side. Each copy retains all formulas and updates independently.
After running your OLS regression (in Stata, R, Python, or Excel), note the auxiliary R-squared from the heteroskedasticity diagnostic output and enter it in this template. The test statistic, p-value, and decision will calculate automatically based on your sample size and specification.
