About This Template

Analyze your trade execution costs with this professional Implementation Shortfall Calculator Excel template. Implementation shortfall, developed by Andre Perold, is the gold standard for measuring total trading costs at institutional investment firms. This template lets you decompose your execution costs into explicit costs, realized P/L, delay costs, and missed trade opportunity costs.

What You Can Calculate

This Excel template calculates the complete 4-component decomposition of implementation shortfall:

  • Total Implementation Shortfall - The difference between your paper portfolio return and actual portfolio return, expressed in both dollars and basis points
  • Explicit Costs - Commissions, fees, and taxes as a percentage of order value
  • Realized P/L - Market impact cost from price movement between benchmark and execution
  • Delay Cost - Price drift on multi-day orders between decision and subsequent batch executions
  • Missed Trade Cost - Opportunity cost of shares that were never executed

Required Inputs

Enter your trade details to analyze execution quality:

  • Trade Side - Buy (+1) or Sell (-1) with automatic sign convention adjustment
  • Decision Price - The price when the trade decision was made (typically previous close)
  • Shares Ordered - Total shares in the order
  • Batch Execution Details - Shares filled and execution prices for up to 2 batches
  • Cancellation Price - Closing price at evaluation period end
  • Commission - Total explicit trading costs

Methodology

This template uses the Perold (1988) implementation shortfall framework, the industry standard for transaction cost analysis. The key formula compares paper portfolio gain (if the entire order executed at decision price) against actual portfolio gain (real execution minus costs):

Implementation Shortfall = Paper Gain - Actual Gain

The 4-component decomposition identifies where costs originate, helping you optimize execution strategies.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Decision price uses previous close (standard Perold assumption)
  • Supports up to 2 execution batches (extendable for complex orders)
  • Does not separately model market impact (captured in realized P/L)
  • For educational analysis - not a replacement for institutional TCA systems

Frequently Asked Questions

Most real-world implementation shortfall analyses involve 1-2 execution batches. The 2-batch structure covers the vast majority of scenarios while keeping the template simple. For complex multi-day executions, you can extend the formulas by adding additional batch columns.

Select Sell (-1) from the Trade Side dropdown. The formulas automatically apply the correct sign convention - all price differentials are multiplied by -1, so rising prices during a sell order show as favorable (negative IS) and falling prices show as unfavorable (positive IS).

Leave all Batch 2 inputs at 0. The formulas handle this automatically - delay cost will be zero and only Batch 1 contributes to realized P/L.
