About This Template

Instantly assess your defined benefit pension plan's financial health with this professional-grade Pension Funded Status Calculator Excel Template. Whether you're a pension plan sponsor, CFO, actuary, or finance student, this template gives you the tools to calculate funded ratios, project Year 1 surplus or deficit, and determine exactly how much you need to contribute to reach your target funding level.

What You Can Calculate

This template delivers 12 key outputs organized into logical sections:

  • Current Status โ€” Surplus/deficit and funded ratio based on your plan assets and PBO
  • Year 1 Projections โ€” Projected assets, PBO, interest cost, surplus, and funded ratio after one year
  • Required Contributions โ€” Total contribution needed to reach your target funded ratio, plus the additional amount beyond your planned contribution
  • Changes โ€” Year-over-year improvement or deterioration in surplus and funded ratio

Required Inputs

Enter data from your actuarial valuation or pension footnotes (ASC 715 / IAS 19):

  • Plan assets at fair value and Projected Benefit Obligation (PBO)
  • Discount rate and expected return on plan assets
  • Annual service cost, benefit payments, and planned employer contributions
  • Target funded ratio (typically 100%)

Methodology

All calculations follow standard pension accounting conventions. Assets project forward using: Assets(t+1) = Assets(t) ร— (1 + ROA) + Contributions - Benefits. PBO grows by service cost plus interest cost (PBO ร— discount rate), less benefits paid. The required contribution formula ensures you hit your target: Required = Target ร— PBO(1) - Assets ร— (1+ROA) + Benefits.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Interest cost accrues on beginning-of-year PBO
  • Contributions and benefit payments occur at year-end
  • Funded ratio uses accounting basis (Assets/PBO), not AFTAP regulatory measure
  • No actuarial gains/losses, mortality adjustments, or ERISA/PBGC mechanics
  • Excel provides Year 1 projections; web calculator has full multi-year projections with charts

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter your planned contribution amount in the input cell, then observe the Required Total Contribution output. Try different values to see how they affect Year 1 funded status. You can also adjust the target funded ratio to model 100%, 90%, or other funding targets.

This template focuses on Year 1 projections with live formulas. To extend to multiple years, duplicate the Year 1 formulas row-by-row, feeding each year's ending values as the next year's starting values. The web calculator at ryanoconnellfinance.com provides full multi-year projections with charts.

From your pension plan's actuarial valuation or 10-K footnotes (ASC 715), you'll need: plan assets at fair value, projected benefit obligation (PBO), discount rate, expected return on plan assets, service cost, and benefit payments. These are standard disclosures in pension footnotes.
