About This Template

Evaluate your regression model fit with this professional R-Squared & Adjusted R-Squared Calculator Excel template. Instantly compute Rยฒ, adjusted Rยฒ, AIC, BIC, and standard error of regression from your regression output values.

What You Can Calculate

This template computes five key regression diagnostics:

  • R-Squared (Rยฒ) โ€” The proportion of variance in your dependent variable explained by the model
  • Adjusted R-Squared โ€” Rยฒ adjusted for the number of regressors, penalizing unnecessary complexity
  • AIC (Akaike Information Criterion) โ€” Model selection metric balancing fit and complexity
  • BIC (Bayesian Information Criterion) โ€” More conservative model selection metric
  • Standard Error of Regression (SER) โ€” Estimated standard deviation of the error term

Required Inputs

You need four values from your regression software output:

  • SSR โ€” Sum of Squared Residuals (from ANOVA table)
  • SST โ€” Total Sum of Squares (from ANOVA table)
  • n โ€” Sample size (number of observations)
  • k โ€” Number of regressors (excluding intercept)

Methodology

All formulas follow standard econometrics textbook definitions. Rยฒ = 1 - SSR/SST measures explained variance. Adjusted Rยฒ penalizes for model complexity using degrees of freedom. AIC and BIC use the reduced OLS comparison form for model ranking.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Assumes standard OLS regression with an intercept
  • Rยฒ measures in-sample fit only, not predictive accuracy
  • AIC/BIC are relative metrics โ€” only meaningful for comparing models on the same data

Frequently Asked Questions

The Excel template lets you save your work, integrate R-squared calculations into larger financial models, and compare multiple regression specifications side-by-side by duplicating the Calculator sheet. It's ideal for coursework, reports, and audit trails.

Duplicate the Calculator sheet (right-click tab > Move or Copy > check 'Create a copy'). Enter Model 1 values in one sheet and Model 2 values in the other. Compare adjusted R-squared (higher is better), AIC, and BIC (lower is better) across sheets.

Most statistical software (Excel Data Analysis, Stata, R, Python statsmodels) reports SSR and SST in the ANOVA table. SSR may also be labeled 'Residual SS' or 'RSS'. SST is often labeled 'Total SS'. The template formulas match standard econometrics textbook definitions.

A fully interactive financial model with live Excel formulas, an Instructions sheet with usage guide, and a Formula Reference sheet with variable definitions and model assumptions. All formulas are visible and editable.

Microsoft Excel 2016 or later. The template uses standard Excel formulas only โ€” no macros, VBA, or add-ins required.

Yes. All cells are fully editable. You can modify any formula, add your own calculations, change formatting, or integrate the model into your existing spreadsheets.

The online calculator runs in your browser for quick calculations. This Excel template gives you a portable, offline financial model you can customize, save, share with colleagues, and integrate into your own analysis.
