About This Template

Calculate your weighted average cost per share with this professional Excel template. Whether you're tracking a single stock across multiple purchases or analyzing a dollar-cost averaging strategy, this Stock Average Calculator Excel template gives you a portable, offline tool to understand your true cost basis.

What You Can Calculate

This template instantly computes your key position metrics:

  • Average Price per Share โ€” Your weighted average cost across all purchases
  • Total Shares โ€” Combined share count from all valid purchases
  • Total Investment โ€” Sum of all purchase costs
  • Break-Even Price โ€” The price needed to recover your investment
  • Unrealized Gain/Loss โ€” Current profit or loss in dollars and percentage (when you enter the current market price)

Required Inputs

For each purchase, enter:

  • Number of Shares โ€” Supports fractional shares for modern brokerage accounts
  • Price per Share โ€” The price you paid at time of purchase

The template includes 10 purchase rows. Leave unused rows blank โ€” they're automatically excluded from calculations. Optionally enter the current market price to see your unrealized gain or loss.

Methodology

The average price calculation uses the standard weighted average formula:

Average Price = Total Investment / Total Shares

Where Total Investment equals the sum of (Shares ร— Price) for each valid purchase. Only rows with both shares and price greater than zero are included in the calculation.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Excludes trading fees, commissions, and taxes
  • Does not account for dividends received or stock splits
  • All purchases assumed to be for the same stock/security
  • Break-even price equals average price (when excluding fees)
