About This Template

Calculate option time decay instantly with this Theta Decay Calculator Excel template. Understand exactly how much value your options lose each day and plan your entry/exit timing with confidence. Whether you are buying options and want to minimize theta bleed, or selling options to capture time decay, this template gives you the key metrics in a portable, editable format.

What You Can Calculate

This template computes all the essential theta decay metrics for calls and puts:

  • Entry Price - Black-Scholes option price at your chosen days-to-expiration
  • Initial Theta - Daily time decay in dollars (how much the option loses per day)
  • Theta as % of Price - Relative cost of holding the option each day
  • Extrinsic Half-Life - Approximate DTE when 50% of time value has decayed
  • Total Extrinsic Decay - The full amount of time value that will erode by expiration

Required Inputs

Enter these 7 parameters to calculate theta decay:

  • Option Type - Call or Put
  • Stock Price - Current price of the underlying
  • Strike Price - Determines moneyness and decay profile
  • Days to Expiration - Your entry point (1-1825 days)
  • Implied Volatility - Annualized IV (higher IV = higher option prices)
  • Risk-Free Rate - Typically the Treasury bill yield
  • Dividend Yield - For dividend-paying stocks

Methodology

This template uses the Black-Scholes model with continuous dividend yield. Option prices are calculated using the standard Black-Scholes formula, and theta is computed analytically using the partial derivative of option price with respect to time. All formulas are visible and editable so you can verify the math or adapt it to your needs.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • European-style exercise (no early exercise)
  • Constant volatility, interest rate, and dividend yield
  • Stock price held constant to isolate time decay effect
  • Calendar days used (365 days/year)

Frequently Asked Questions

Initial Theta shows how much the option loses (or rarely gains) per day at entry, all else equal. A theta of -$0.05 means the option loses about 5 cents daily to time decay. This is the cost of holding the option. Theta as % of Price shows this as a daily percentage loss.

The half-life shows when 50% of extrinsic (time) value has decayed. This Excel template uses a rough approximation based on the sqrt-decay rule. For precise values that account for volatility and moneyness, use the free online calculator.

Excel does not support the real-time interactive charts that the web version provides. This template focuses on the key metrics (entry price, theta, half-life, extrinsic value) that inform trading decisions. For the visual decay curve, use the free online calculator.
