About This Template
Take control of your monthly budget with the 50/30/20 Budget Planner Excel template. This downloadable spreadsheet helps you allocate your after-tax income across needs, wants, and savings using the proven 50/30/20 rule โ or customize the percentages to fit your financial goals.
What You Can Calculate
Enter your income and actual spending to instantly see:
- Target Amounts โ How much you should spend on needs, wants, and savings based on your chosen percentages
- Surplus/Deficit โ Whether you're under or over budget in each category
- Budget Score โ An overall assessment: Excellent, Good, Needs Work, or Over Budget
- Unallocated Income โ Money left over after all spending and savings
Required Inputs
You'll need just four numbers to get started:
- After-Tax Monthly Income โ Your take-home pay after taxes and deductions
- Actual Needs Spending โ Housing, utilities, groceries, insurance, minimum debt payments
- Actual Wants Spending โ Dining out, entertainment, subscriptions, shopping
- Actual Savings/Debt Payoff โ Retirement contributions, emergency fund, extra debt payments
Methodology
The 50/30/20 rule, popularized by Senator Elizabeth Warren in "All Your Worth," suggests allocating 50% of after-tax income to needs, 30% to wants, and 20% to savings. This template calculates your targets using: Target = Income ร Percentage, then compares against your actual spending to show surplus or deficit in each category.
Assumptions & Limitations
- All amounts are monthly figures (adjust for weekly or annual as needed)
- Target percentages should sum to 100% for complete allocation
- Budget score uses a 10% tolerance for "Good" rating on needs/wants
- For educational purposes only โ not personalized financial advice
