About This Template
Calculate bad debt expense and allowance for doubtful accounts using the aging-of-receivables method with this professional Excel template. Perfect for accountants, financial analysts, and business owners managing accounts receivable.
What You Can Calculate
This template automatically computes:
- Required Allowance - The total allowance for doubtful accounts based on your aging analysis
- Bad Debt Expense - The adjusting entry needed to bring your allowance to the required level
- Net Realizable Value (NRV) - The expected collectible amount of your receivables
- Allowance Percentage - Required allowance as a percentage of total receivables
- Per-Bucket Uncollectibles - Estimated uncollectible amounts for each aging category
Required Inputs
Enter receivable amounts and estimated uncollectible rates for five standard aging buckets:
- Current (0-30 days past due)
- 31-60 days past due
- 61-90 days past due
- 91-120 days past due
- Over 120 days past due
Also enter your existing allowance balance to calculate the required adjustment.
Methodology
Uses the aging-of-receivables (balance sheet) method required under GAAP. The required allowance equals the sum of each bucket's amount multiplied by its estimated uncollectible rate. Bad debt expense is calculated as the difference between the required allowance and your existing balance.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Uncollectible rates are entered as percentages (e.g., 5 for 5%)
- Supports both credit balances (normal) and debit balances (when write-offs exceed estimates) in the existing allowance
- Currency values display with 2 decimal places for financial modeling precision
Frequently Asked Questions
The template includes five standard aging buckets: Current (0-30 days), 31-60 days, 61-90 days, 91-120 days, and Over 120 days past due. Each bucket has separate fields for the receivable amount and estimated uncollectible percentage.
Enter a negative value in the Existing Allowance Balance field. This occurs when write-offs during the period exceeded the prior allowance balance. The calculator will correctly compute the larger bad debt expense needed to restore the allowance to its required credit balance.
A negative result means your existing allowance exceeds the required allowance. This creates a credit to Bad Debt Expense (reducing expense) or can be recorded as a recovery of bad debts, depending on your accounting policy.
