About This Template
Perform z-tests and t-tests for means and proportions with this comprehensive Hypothesis Testing Calculator Excel template. Whether you're testing a population mean when sigma is known (z-test), estimating from sample data (t-test), or evaluating proportions, this template automates the calculations and provides clear reject/fail-to-reject decisions.
What You Can Calculate
This template includes three complete hypothesis testing sections:
- z-Test for Mean โ When population standard deviation (ฯ) is known. Computes z-statistic, critical value, p-value, and decision.
- t-Test for Mean โ When ฯ is unknown and estimated from sample data. Includes degrees of freedom and t-distribution calculations.
- z-Test for Proportion โ For testing population proportions with automatic sample-size validation checks.
Each section supports two-sided, greater-than, and less-than alternative hypotheses with direction-specific critical values and p-values.
Required Inputs
Enter your sample statistics in the light blue cells:
- Sample mean or proportion โ Your observed value from the data
- Null hypothesis value โ The hypothesized parameter value
- Standard deviation โ Population ฯ (z-test) or sample s (t-test)
- Sample size (n) โ Number of observations
- Significance level (ฮฑ) โ Choose 0.01, 0.05, or 0.10
- Alternative hypothesis direction โ Two-sided, greater, or less
Methodology
The template uses standard statistical formulas:
- z-statistic: z = (xฬ - ฮผโ) / (ฯ / โn)
- t-statistic: t = (xฬ - ฮผโ) / (s / โn) with df = n - 1
- Proportion z: z = (pฬ - pโ) / โ(pโ(1-pโ)/n)
P-values are computed using the appropriate distribution (normal or t) based on test type and tail direction. Decision output automatically compares p-value to your chosen significance level.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Simple random sampling with independent observations
- z-test for mean requires known population ฯ and normal population (or n โฅ 30)
- t-test for mean requires approximately normal population or large n
- Proportion test requires nรpโ โฅ 10 and nร(1-pโ) โฅ 10 for normal approximation
- One-sample tests only โ two-sample and paired tests not included
Frequently Asked Questions
Use the Alternative dropdown: 2 for two-sided (โ ), 1 for greater (>), or -1 for less (<). The formulas automatically compute the correct critical values and p-values for each direction.
Excel works best with visible formulas you can audit. Each section has its own inputs and outputs so you can see exactly which formulas apply to your test type. This also lets you compare results across test types side by side.
Yes. Select the alpha cell (e.g., B10 for the z-test), go to Data > Data Validation, and either delete the validation rule or change it to allow any decimal. Then type your custom alpha value directly. The formulas work with any alpha between 0 and 1.
