About This Template

Download our Electricity Peak/Off-Peak Pricing Calculator Excel template to analyze wholesale power market spreads and estimate monthly block contract values. This ready-to-use spreadsheet helps energy traders, analysts, and finance professionals quickly calculate peak-to-off-peak ratios, weighted average prices, and 5x16 block values.

What You Can Calculate

Enter your peak and off-peak prices, contract size, and delivery month weekdays to instantly compute:

  • Peak/Off-Peak Ratio โ€” Measures the spread between high-demand and low-demand pricing periods
  • Spread Classification โ€” Automatically categorizes as High Spread, Moderate, or Flat
  • Weighted Average Price โ€” Time-weighted average using 80 peak + 88 off-peak hours per week
  • Monthly Peak Block Value โ€” Total revenue/cost for a 5x16 on-peak block contract
  • Monthly Off-Peak Block Value โ€” Total value for weeknight off-peak energy

Required Inputs

  • Peak Price โ€” On-peak wholesale price ($/MWh), typically $30-100/MWh
  • Off-Peak Price โ€” Off-peak wholesale price ($/MWh), usually lower than peak
  • Contract Size โ€” Power capacity in megawatts (0.1-1000 MW)
  • Weekdays in Month โ€” Business days in the delivery month (18-23 days)

Methodology

This template uses the PJM/Eastern peak hour convention: 7am-11pm Monday through Friday (16 hours x 5 days = 80 hours/week). Off-peak includes weeknights and weekends (88 hours/week). Monthly block values are calculated as Price x Hours per Day x Weekdays x MW.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Uses PJM/Eastern peak hour definitions โ€” ERCOT and CAISO conventions differ
  • Off-peak block uses weeknight 8-hour strip only (excludes full weekend hours)
  • NERC holidays are treated as off-peak but not automatically excluded
  • For educational purposes โ€” actual trading involves LMP, congestion, and ancillary services

Frequently Asked Questions

This template uses the PJM/Eastern convention: on-peak hours are 7am-11pm Monday through Friday (16 hours x 5 days = 80 hours/week). Off-peak includes weeknights and weekends. Other ISOs like ERCOT and CAISO use different definitions.

A ratio above 1.5 indicates a high spread with strong arbitrage potential. Ratios between 1.2-1.5 are typical. Below 1.2 indicates a flat spread, common during shoulder seasons or high-solar periods (the duck curve effect).
