About This Template

Analyze refinery profit margins with this professional crack spread calculator Excel template. Whether you're an energy trader, refinery analyst, or finance professional studying commodity markets, this template lets you instantly calculate the gross margin from converting crude oil into gasoline and heating oil.

What You Can Calculate

This template calculates five key metrics across three industry-standard crack spread ratios:

  • Crack Spread (Per Barrel) โ€” The core refining margin metric showing profit per barrel of crude processed
  • Total Crack โ€” Gross dollar margin for the full ratio (e.g., 3 barrels crude for 3-2-1)
  • Gasoline Value โ€” Product output value based on RBOB futures prices
  • Heating Oil Value โ€” Distillate output value based on heating oil/diesel futures
  • Margin Assessment โ€” Automatic profitability classification (Profitable >$15, Marginal $5-15, Unprofitable <$5)

Required Inputs

Enter four values to calculate your crack spread:

  • Crude Oil Price โ€” WTI or Brent benchmark price per barrel
  • RBOB Gasoline Price โ€” Reformulated gasoline price per gallon (NYMEX RB contract)
  • Heating Oil Price โ€” ULSD/diesel price per gallon (NYMEX HO contract)
  • Spread Type โ€” Select 3-2-1 (U.S. standard), 2-1-1 (simplified), or 5-3-2 (European)

Methodology

The template uses the standard petroleum industry crack spread formula. For a 3-2-1 spread: (2 x Gasoline x 42) + (1 x Heating Oil x 42) - (3 x Crude), then divide by 3 for the per-barrel margin. The 42 converts gallons to barrels. All three ratio configurations are built into the dropdown โ€” formulas adjust automatically when you switch.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Calculates gross crack spread only โ€” does not include refinery operating costs (typically $3-5/barrel additional)
  • Uses prompt-month futures prices โ€” no basis, transportation, or timing adjustments
  • Product yields assumed per selected ratio โ€” actual refinery output varies by configuration
  • For educational and analytical purposes โ€” not a substitute for professional refinery economics models

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Duplicate the Calculator sheet (right-click tab > Move or Copy > check Create a copy) to create separate scenarios for 3-2-1, 2-1-1, and 5-3-2 spreads. Each copy recalculates independently when you change inputs.

Use NYMEX CL (crude), RB (RBOB gasoline), and HO (heating oil) front-month settlements. These are available on CME Group, Bloomberg, or financial data providers. Enter crude in dollars per barrel and products in dollars per gallon.

No - this calculates gross crack spread only. Typical refinery operating costs run 3-5 dollars per barrel additional. The margin assessment thresholds account for this: spreads below 5 dollars per barrel are flagged as unprofitable because they likely will not cover operating costs.
