About This Template
Calculate implied repo rates from bond futures pricing with this professional Excel template. Fixed income traders, CFA candidates, and portfolio managers use implied repo rate analysis to identify cash-and-carry arbitrage opportunities and determine which bond is cheapest-to-deliver. This template gives you an editable model you can customize for your own basis trading analysis.
What You Can Calculate
Enter your bond and futures data to instantly calculate:
- Implied Repo Rate โ The annualized financing rate embedded in the cash/futures price relationship
- Basis Assessment โ Automatic classification as Cheap Basis, Fair Value, or Rich Basis
- Cash-and-Carry P&L โ Profit or loss at your actual financing rate, scaled to your position size
- Gross and Net Basis โ Raw price differential and carry-adjusted basis
- Invoice and Full Cash Prices โ Complete breakdown of delivery economics
Required Inputs
The template requires standard bond futures data:
- Cash Bond Price โ Clean price per $100 face value
- Futures Price โ Contract price from the exchange
- Conversion Factor โ Published delivery factor for your specific bond
- Days to Delivery, Coupon Rate, Accrued Interest โ Standard bond terms
- Market Repo Rate โ Your actual financing cost (adjustable, unlike the web calculator)
Methodology
The template uses the standard implied repo rate formula: IRR = [(Invoice Price - Full Cash Price + Carry) / Full Cash Price] x (360 / Days). Invoice price is calculated as (Futures x Conversion Factor) + Accrued at Delivery. Carry represents coupon income earned during the holding period. All calculations follow Actual/360 money market conventions.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Semi-annual coupon payments with 182.5-day periods
- No repo haircut or margin in the basic calculation
- Flat repo rate curve (no term structure modeling)
- Delivery option value not modeled (assumes hold to delivery)
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Unlike the web calculator which uses a fixed 4% market rate, this Excel template includes an editable Market Repo Rate input. Change this value to model your actual financing cost and instantly see how it affects your cash-and-carry P&L and the IRR vs Market spread.
Enter your actual notional in the Face Amount input (default is $1,000,000). The template automatically scales the per-$100 P&L to your position size. You can model anything from a single $100,000 Treasury contract to multi-million dollar basis trades.
The template classifies trades as Cheap Basis (IRR exceeds market rate by more than 25 bp - potential buy opportunity), Rich Basis (IRR is more than 25 bp below market - potential sell opportunity), or Fair Value (spread within 25 bp). Use this as a quick screening tool before deeper analysis.
