About This Template
The Bank Capital Ratios Calculator Excel Template provides a ready-to-use financial model for computing Basel III regulatory capital ratios. Whether you're a bank analyst evaluating capital adequacy, a finance student learning regulatory frameworks, or a risk professional stress-testing capital positions, this spreadsheet delivers professional-grade calculations with full formula transparency.
What You Can Calculate
This template computes 9 key outputs:
- Risk-Weighted Assets (RWA) โ Sum of assets weighted by Basel III risk categories (0% to 150%)
- Total Exposure โ Unweighted sum of all assets for leverage ratio denominator
- CET1 Ratio โ Common Equity Tier 1 divided by RWA (minimum 4.5%, buffer 7.0%)
- Tier 1 Ratio โ Tier 1 Capital divided by RWA (minimum 6.0%, buffer 8.5%)
- Total Capital Ratio โ Total Capital divided by RWA (minimum 8.0%, buffer 10.5%)
- Leverage Ratio โ Tier 1 Capital divided by Total Exposure (minimum 3.0%)
- CET1 Surplus/Deficit โ How much CET1 exceeds or falls short of buffer requirements
Required Inputs
To use this calculator, you'll need:
- CET1 Capital โ Common stock plus retained earnings minus goodwill and intangibles
- AT1 Capital โ Additional Tier 1 such as perpetual preferred stock or CoCos
- Tier 2 Capital โ Subordinated debt and eligible loan loss reserves
- Asset Categories โ Cash/Treasuries (0% RW), GSE Securities (20%), Residential Mortgages (50%), Commercial Loans (100%), Past-Due Loans (150%), Other Assets (100%)
- G-SIB Surcharge โ Additional buffer for systemically important banks (0% for most)
Methodology
The calculations follow the Basel III Standardized Approach. Risk-Weighted Assets are computed as the sum of each asset category multiplied by its assigned risk weight. Capital ratios divide the relevant capital measure by RWA, while the Leverage Ratio uses unweighted total exposure as its denominator. Warning messages automatically appear when ratios fall below regulatory thresholds.
Assumptions
- Simplified risk weights based on Basel III Standardized Approach
- All figures denominated in millions of dollars ($M)
- RWA reflects credit risk only (operational and market risk not included)
- Single-period point-in-time analysis without countercyclical buffer
- For educational purposes only โ not financial advice
