About This Template
The Barrier Option Pricing Calculator Excel Template provides a ready-to-use financial model for pricing all 8 barrier option contracts. Whether you're a derivatives student studying exotic options, a risk manager evaluating structured products, or a quant analyst verifying pricing models, this spreadsheet delivers professional-grade Hull Chapter 26 calculations with full formula transparency.
What You Can Calculate
This template computes prices for all 8 barrier option types plus verification metrics:
- Down-and-In Call/Put โ Options that activate when stock drops to barrier H
- Down-and-Out Call/Put โ Options that expire worthless if stock drops to barrier H
- Up-and-In Call/Put โ Options that activate when stock rises to barrier H
- Up-and-Out Call/Put โ Options that expire worthless if stock rises to barrier H
- Vanilla BSM Prices โ Standard Black-Scholes reference prices for comparison
- Parity Checks โ Verify that Knock-In + Knock-Out = Vanilla for each pair
- Barrier Distance โ How far the barrier is from current stock price
- Rebate PV โ Present value of rebate payment at expiration
Required Inputs
To use this calculator, you'll need:
- Stock Price (S) โ Current market price of the underlying asset
- Strike Price (K) โ Exercise price at expiration
- Barrier Level (H) โ Price level that triggers knock-in or knock-out
- Risk-Free Rate (r) โ Annualized continuously compounded rate
- Volatility (ฯ) โ Annualized volatility of the underlying
- Time to Expiration (T) โ Time remaining in years
- Dividend Yield (q) โ Continuous dividend yield
- Rebate โ Optional payment if barrier is hit/not hit
Methodology
The calculations use Hull Chapter 26 analytical formulas for continuous barrier monitoring. Key intermediate parameters include lambda (ฮป), xโ, y, and yโ. The formulas use safe power clamping (exponent ยฑ500) for numerical stability. In-out parity is verified: Knock-In + Knock-Out = Vanilla. When H = S (at barrier), knock-out = 0 and knock-in = vanilla.
Assumptions
- European-style exercise (at expiration only)
- Underlying follows geometric Brownian motion (lognormal distribution)
- Volatility and interest rates are constant
- Continuous dividend yield (not discrete dividends)
- Continuous barrier monitoring
- No transaction costs or taxes
- For educational purposes only โ not financial advice
Frequently Asked Questions
Showing all prices lets you compare barrier costs and verify in-out parity at a glance. In practice, traders often evaluate multiple barrier structures before choosing one.
In-out parity states that a knock-in plus a knock-out option equals the vanilla option (same strike, expiry). The parity check cells verify this relationship, confirming formula correctness.
Down barriers require H < S (barrier below current price), while up barriers require H > S (barrier above). Change the barrier level to see valid prices for each type.
