About This Template
Analyze capital structure decisions with this ready-to-use Capital Structure Calculator Excel template. Built on the Modigliani-Miller framework with corporate taxes, this spreadsheet helps finance professionals and students understand how leverage affects firm value, WACC, and equity risk.
What You Can Calculate
This template computes all key capital structure metrics from your inputs:
- WACC - Weighted Average Cost of Capital reflecting the after-tax cost of debt
- D/E, D/V, and E/V Ratios - Capital structure weights for valuation models
- Interest Tax Shield - Present value of perpetual tax savings from debt (T x D)
- Unlevered and Levered Firm Value - V_U and V_L using M&M Proposition I with taxes
- Levered Beta - Equity beta via the Hamada equation (optional)
Required Inputs
Enter five core values to run the analysis:
- Equity Value (E) - Market capitalization or estimated equity value
- Debt Value (D) - Market or book value of outstanding debt
- Cost of Equity (r_e) - Required return, typically from CAPM
- Cost of Debt (r_d) - Pre-tax yield on the firm's debt
- Tax Rate (T) - Marginal corporate tax rate
Two optional inputs enable advanced analysis: Unlevered Firm Value (V_U) for custom valuations, and Unlevered Beta for Hamada equation conversions.
Methodology
The template implements core corporate finance relationships:
- WACC Formula: (E/V) x r_e + (D/V) x r_d x (1 - T)
- M&M Proposition I: V_L = V_U + T x D
- Hamada Equation: Beta_L = Beta_U x [1 + (1 - T) x (D/E)]
Assumptions & Limitations
This model assumes perpetual debt, no financial distress costs, no agency costs, and no personal taxes. These are companion textbook relationships - inputs are not constrained to satisfy all M&M propositions simultaneously. Best suited for educational analysis and quick scenario comparisons.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can analyze how different debt levels affect WACC and firm value, compare levered vs unlevered valuations, estimate tax shield benefits for capital structure decisions, and convert between levered and unlevered beta for comparable company analysis.
Yes. The V_U input is optional - if you leave it blank, the template derives V_U from your E and D inputs. If you enter your own estimate (e.g., from a sum-of-parts or asset-based valuation), the template uses your value and shows how V_L compares.
Enter an unlevered beta in the optional field and the template calculates levered beta automatically. This is useful when relevering betas from comparable companies with different capital structures. Leave the field blank if you only need WACC and tax shield outputs.
