About This Template

Analyze commodity futures returns with this professional Commodity Roll Yield Calculator Excel template. Whether you're evaluating commodity ETF investments, comparing futures market structures, or studying the impact of contango and backwardation on portfolio returns, this template breaks down total return into its three core components.

What You Can Calculate

This template decomposes fully collateralized long futures returns into:

  • Spot Return - The percentage change in the underlying commodity price over your holding period
  • Roll Yield - The gain or loss from rolling futures contracts, positive in backwardation and negative in contango
  • Collateral Return - Interest earned on T-bill collateral backing the futures position
  • Total Return - The sum of all three components for your complete return picture
  • Market Structure - Automatic detection of backwardation, contango, or flat curve conditions

Required Inputs

Enter six values to analyze your commodity position:

  • Spot Prices - Start and end prices for the underlying commodity
  • Futures Prices - Nearby (front-month) and deferred (back-month) contract prices
  • Collateral Rate - Your T-bill or money market yield (annualized)
  • Holding Period - Number of months for the single roll window (1-12)

Methodology

The template uses standard commodity return decomposition formulas. Spot return is calculated as the simple percentage change in price. Roll yield is computed as (Nearby - Deferred) / Nearby, with automatic zeroing when the curve is effectively flat. Collateral return applies simple interest for the holding period. All formulas are visible and editable for transparency.

Key Assumptions

  • Single-period analysis (one roll window)
  • Long-only, fully collateralized futures exposure
  • Additive return decomposition (not multiplicative)
  • Roll yield zeroed when spread is less than 0.01% of nearby price

Frequently Asked Questions

This template calculates a single roll period. For multi-period analysis, copy the Calculator sheet, enter different futures prices for each roll window, and sum the individual period returns. All formulas are visible and editable for custom scenarios.

Enter the current spot and futures prices for each commodity in separate copies of the template. Compare the roll yield component across commodities to see which markets offer favorable curve structures. Save each scenario for side-by-side analysis in your investment process.
