About This Template

Analyze convertible bonds with this professional Excel template. Calculate conversion value, conversion premium, investment value (bond floor), and market conversion price instantly. Perfect for fixed income analysts, portfolio managers, and finance students evaluating hybrid securities.

What You Can Calculate

This template computes six key convertible bond metrics:

  • Conversion Value (Parity) โ€” The value if converted to stock immediately, calculated as conversion ratio times current stock price
  • Conversion Premium โ€” Both dollar amount and percentage premium over parity, showing what you pay for optionality and downside protection
  • Conversion Price โ€” The effective stock price implied by the bond's face value
  • Market Conversion Price โ€” The actual price per share you'd pay by buying the bond at market and converting
  • Investment Value (Bond Floor) โ€” Present value of the bond's cash flows at comparable straight bond yields, representing downside protection
  • Premium over Investment Value โ€” How much the market price exceeds the bond floor

Required Inputs

Enter six values to analyze any convertible bond:

  • Bond Market Price โ€” Current trading price (face value is $1,000 per market convention)
  • Conversion Ratio โ€” Shares received per bond upon conversion, found in the prospectus
  • Current Stock Price โ€” Market price of the underlying common stock
  • Annual Coupon Rate โ€” Coupon as percentage of face value (enter 0 for zero-coupon convertibles)
  • Years to Maturity โ€” Time remaining until the bond matures
  • Comparable Straight Bond YTM โ€” Yield of similar non-convertible debt from the same issuer

Methodology

The template uses standard convertible bond valuation formulas. Conversion value equals the conversion ratio multiplied by stock price. Investment value is calculated using present value of an annuity for coupons plus present value of face value, discounted at the comparable straight bond yield. All formulas are visible and editable in Excel.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Face value fixed at $1,000 (US market convention)
  • Annual coupon payment frequency
  • Valuation on coupon payment date (no accrued interest)
  • No call provisions, put options, or forced conversion features
  • End-of-period discounting convention

Frequently Asked Questions

Convertible bonds trade with a standard face value of $1,000 per bond in the US market. The conversion ratio specifies how many shares you receive per $1,000 face value bond. This is market convention, not a limitation of the calculator.

Look for non-convertible bonds from the same issuer with similar maturity. If unavailable, use the issuer's credit spread over Treasuries plus the risk-free rate. This reflects what the bond would yield without the conversion option.

Yes. The template uses standard Excel formulas you can modify. Unprotect the Calculator sheet to add call schedules, put options, or other provisions. The investment value formula can be extended to include call premium discounting.
