About This Template
Calculate inflation and purchasing power with precision. This professional Excel template provides three powerful tools in one: build a Consumer Price Index from your own basket of goods, calculate inflation rates between any two periods, and convert nominal dollars to real (inflation-adjusted) values.
What You Can Calculate
This comprehensive template includes three independent sections:
- Section 1 - CPI Basket: Build a custom Consumer Price Index using up to 10 goods with their quantities and prices across two time periods
- Section 2 - Inflation Rate: Calculate cumulative and annualized inflation from any two CPI values
- Section 3 - Real Dollars: Convert nominal amounts to inflation-adjusted dollars and project future purchasing power erosion
Required Inputs
Each section uses different inputs:
- Basket CPI: Good names, quantities, base year prices, and current year prices
- Inflation Rate: Two CPI index values (e.g., from BLS data) and the years between them
- Real Dollars: Nominal dollar amount, source and target CPI values, assumed inflation rate, and projection years
Methodology
The template uses standard economic formulas including the Laspeyres fixed-weight price index (CPI = Current Cost / Base Cost x 100), compound annual growth rate for annualized inflation, and the Rule of 70 approximation for price doubling time. All formulas are visible and editable for educational transparency.
Assumptions and Limitations
- CPI uses a Laspeyres (fixed-weight) basket - quantities held constant across periods
- Base year CPI is defined as 100 in the basket section
- Purchasing power projection assumes a constant annual inflation rate
- Rule of 70 is an approximation; exact doubling time is ln(2)/ln(1+r)
Frequently Asked Questions
Section 1 builds a CPI from a basket of goods you define. Section 2 calculates inflation rates from two CPI values (like BLS data). Section 3 converts dollars across time periods and projects purchasing power erosion.
Excel templates use fixed rows for simplicity. For most analyses, 10 goods is sufficient - leave unused rows blank. The formulas automatically ignore empty rows.
Use official CPI data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The CPI-U (All Urban Consumers) is the most common. Ensure both values use the same index base year.
