About This Template

Compare borrowing costs across multiple foreign currencies with this Debt Denomination Calculator Excel template. Ideal for corporate treasury teams, finance students, and international business analysts evaluating foreign currency debt opportunities.

What You Can Calculate

This template calculates the true cost of borrowing in foreign currencies after accounting for expected exchange rate movements:

  • Effective Borrowing Cost — The all-in interest cost combining the foreign rate plus FX impact
  • Break-Even FX Rate — The exchange rate threshold where foreign debt equals domestic cost
  • Cheapest Option — Automatically identifies the lowest-cost borrowing currency
  • Annual Savings — Dollar savings from choosing optimal currency over domestic

Required Inputs

Enter your domestic interest rate, then for each of three foreign currencies provide:

  • Currency name (EUR, JPY, GBP, etc.)
  • Foreign borrowing rate
  • Expected FX change (positive = appreciation, negative = depreciation)

Methodology

The template uses standard international finance formulas:

  • Effective Cost: r_eff = (1 + r_foreign) x (1 + %DeltaFX) - 1
  • Break-Even: BE = (1 + r_domestic) / (1 + r_foreign) - 1

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Single-period (1-year) analysis
  • Fixed interest rates over the borrowing period
  • No transaction costs, hedging costs, or credit risk differential
