About This Template

Calculate comprehensive descriptive statistics with this Descriptive Statistics Calculator Excel template. Enter your dataset and instantly compute 18 statistical measures including central tendency, dispersion, shape statistics, and quartiles.

What You Can Calculate

This template computes:

  • Summary Statistics โ€” Count, sum, minimum, maximum, and range
  • Central Tendency โ€” Mean, median, and mode
  • Dispersion โ€” Variance, standard deviation, mean absolute deviation, and coefficient of variation
  • Shape Statistics โ€” Skewness and excess kurtosis (Fisher adjusted)
  • Quartiles โ€” Q1, Q2 (median), Q3, and interquartile range (IQR)

Toggle between sample and population statistics with a single dropdown.

Required Inputs

Enter your data in the light blue cells:

  • Data values โ€” Up to 100 numeric observations in column E
  • Statistics Type โ€” Choose Sample or Population from the dropdown

Results update automatically as you enter data. Empty cells are ignored.

Methodology

The template uses standard statistical formulas:

  • Sample variance uses Bessel correction: sยฒ = ฮฃ(xแตข - xฬ„)ยฒ / (n - 1)
  • Population variance uses: ฯƒยฒ = ฮฃ(xแตข - ฮผ)ยฒ / n
  • Skewness uses Fisher adjusted formula via Excel SKEW function
  • Kurtosis uses Fisher adjusted excess kurtosis via Excel KURT function
  • Percentiles use Excel PERCENTILE function with linear interpolation

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Observations are assumed to be independent
  • Sample formulas require nโ‰ฅ2 for variance and standard deviation
  • Skewness requires nโ‰ฅ3; kurtosis requires nโ‰ฅ4
  • Mode shows only one value if data is multimodal
  • CV is most meaningful for positive ratio-scale data
  • For educational purposes only โ€” not financial advice

Frequently Asked Questions

Sample statistics use n-1 in the denominator (Bessel correction) to provide an unbiased estimate when working with a subset of data. Population statistics use n when you have data for the entire group. Use Sample when inferring from a subset.

Skewness requires n>=3 because its formula divides by (n-1)(n-2). Kurtosis requires n>=4 because its formula includes (n-3) in the denominator. These minimums ensure mathematically valid results.

Enter your numeric values one per cell in the Data Input column (column E). You can enter up to 100 values. The first 20 rows are visible by default - expand the grouped rows to see more input cells.

A fully interactive financial model with live Excel formulas, an Instructions sheet with usage guide, and a Formula Reference sheet with variable definitions and model assumptions. All formulas are visible and editable.

Microsoft Excel 2016 or later. The template uses standard Excel formulas only โ€” no macros, VBA, or add-ins required.
