About This Template
This free Dollar-Cost Averaging Excel Template turns a fixed-dollar investment schedule into a transparent period-by-period model. It mirrors the live calculator math while giving you an editable workbook you can save, audit, and reuse.
Enter the periodic investment amount, number of periods, frequency, comparison context, final/current price, and up to 60 purchase prices. The workbook calculates shares bought each period, cumulative shares, cumulative invested, running average cost, total invested, DCA ending value and return, and a hypothetical lump-sum ending value and return.
The template is built for practical DCA questions: how average cost changes after each purchase, whether lower-price periods helped the schedule accumulate more shares, and how gradual investing compares with putting the same total dollars in at the first scheduled price. A chart plots purchase price against cumulative average cost so the cost-basis path is easy to inspect.
The model intentionally keeps the assumptions clean. It does not add dividends, taxes, commissions, cash yield while waiting, slippage, or stochastic simulation. That makes it useful as a focused first-pass analysis, teaching aid, or companion to the online Dollar-Cost Averaging Calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
This template models a fixed-dollar dollar-cost averaging schedule and compares it with investing the same total dollars at the first price. A stock-average template is better for arbitrary existing lots where share counts and purchase prices are already known.
Yes. Select Windfall Deployment as the comparison context and enter the planned price schedule. The workbook compares gradual deployment with investing the full amount at the first scheduled price, without adding cash interest while waiting.
Set the number of periods, then enter prices for rows 1 through that period count. Rows beyond the selected number of periods are ignored by the outputs and chart.
The chart plots each active purchase price against the cumulative average cost after each purchase, making it easier to see how lower-price and higher-price periods change the running DCA cost basis.
