About This Template

Calculate Forward Rate Agreement cash settlements instantly with this professional FRA Settlement Calculator Excel template. Perfect for treasury analysts, derivatives traders, risk managers, and finance students who need to compute FRA payoffs for interest rate hedging or derivatives pricing.

What You Can Calculate

This template computes all components of the FRA settlement formula:

  • Settlement Amount - The cash payment exchanged at the FRA start date, discounted to present value
  • Rate Differential - The difference between the reference rate and contracted FRA rate
  • Interest Difference - The undiscounted interest differential before present value adjustment
  • Discount Factor - The present value factor applied to the interest difference
  • Day Fraction - The contract period expressed as a fraction of the year

Required Inputs

Enter these values to calculate your FRA settlement:

  • Position Type - Select Pay Fixed (profits when rates rise) or Receive Fixed (profits when rates fall)
  • Notional Principal - The face value of the underlying loan agreement
  • FRA Rate - The fixed rate agreed upon in the FRA contract
  • Reference Rate - The actual market rate at settlement (SOFR, EURIBOR, etc.)
  • Contract Period - Number of days in the FRA period
  • Day Count Basis - Choose Actual/360 (money market standard) or Actual/365

Methodology

The template uses the standard FRA settlement formula: Settlement = NP x [(R - FRA) x (days/DCC)] / [1 + R x (days/DCC)]. Settlement is discounted because the payment occurs at the start of the FRA period, not at maturity. The discount factor converts the future interest differential to present value using the reference rate.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Settlement occurs at the beginning of the FRA period (advance settlement)
  • Discounting uses the reference rate observed at settlement date
  • Supports Actual/360 and Actual/365 day count conventions
  • No credit risk or counterparty adjustments included

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The template uses live Excel formulas, so you can duplicate the Calculator sheet to compare different FRA scenarios side-by-side - for example, different notional amounts, contract periods, or rate assumptions.

Use the Position Type dropdown at the top of the Calculator sheet. Selecting 'Receive Fixed' automatically flips the settlement sign - you'll receive payment when rates fall below the FRA rate instead of when they rise.
