Methodology
The template uses standard game theory definitions. A Nash equilibrium occurs when no player can unilaterally improve their payoff. An outcome is Pareto efficient if no other outcome makes one player better off without harming another. Prisoner's Dilemma detection uses the canonical T>R>P>S ordering check.

Frequently Asked Questions
This template is designed for standard 2x2 normal-form games. For larger games (3+ strategies or players), you would need to extend the payoff matrix and Nash equilibrium logic significantly. The current formulas check all 4 cells; a 3x3 game would require 9 cells with more complex best-response comparisons. We recommend using this template for 2x2 analysis and specialized software for larger games.
This template analyzes one-shot simultaneous games only. For repeated games, you could use the payoffs as per-round values and manually calculate discounted totals. For sequential (extensive-form) games, the analysis differs - you would need backward induction rather than simultaneous Nash equilibrium analysis. Consider creating separate scenarios in different worksheets for multi-round analysis.
The template uses the strict canonical definition: both players must have dominant strategies AND the payoff ordering T > R > P > S must hold for both players (Temptation > Reward > Punishment > Sucker). If your game has dominant strategies but doesn't satisfy this exact ordering - for example, if the punishment equals the sucker's payoff - it's technically not a Prisoner's Dilemma even though it may share some characteristics.
