About This Template

Model hedge fund fee impact with this free Hedge Fund Fee Calculator Excel template. Instantly see how the classic "2 and 20" fee structureโ€”or any management/incentive fee combinationโ€”affects your net returns. Whether you're evaluating fund managers, comparing fee proposals, or teaching portfolio management concepts, this template gives you transparent, editable formulas in a portable offline format.

What You Can Calculate

Enter your fund's AUM, gross return, and fee parameters to instantly compute:

  • Net Return (% and $) โ€” Your actual return after all fees are deducted
  • Total Fees โ€” Combined management and incentive fees paid to the manager
  • Fee Drag โ€” The percentage-point difference between gross and net returns
  • Management Fee ($) โ€” Annual fee on assets under management
  • Incentive Fee ($) โ€” Performance fee on returns above the hurdle

Required Inputs

You'll need five inputs to run the analysis:

  • Fund AUM โ€” Total assets under management at period start
  • Gross Annual Return โ€” Fund performance before fees (-100% to +200%)
  • Management Fee โ€” Annual fee rate on AUM (typically 1-3%)
  • Incentive Fee โ€” Share of profits above hurdle (typically 10-30%)
  • Hurdle Rate โ€” Minimum return before incentive applies (0% = no hurdle)

Methodology

The template uses a hard hurdle approach: the incentive fee applies only to returns exceeding the hurdle amount, calculated net of management fees. Key formulas include:

  • Incentive Base = max(0, Net-of-Mgmt Return โˆ’ Hurdle Amount)
  • Net Return = Gross Return โˆ’ Management Fee โˆ’ Incentive Fee
  • Fee Drag = Gross Return % โˆ’ Net Return %

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Single-period annual analysis (no multi-year compounding)
  • Hard hurdle structure (not soft hurdle or catch-up)
  • No high-water mark modeling
  • Management fee calculated on beginning-of-period AUM

Frequently Asked Questions

Save multiple copies of the template with different fee assumptions (e.g., '2-and-20 Fund A' vs '1-and-10 Fund B'). Enter identical gross return scenarios in each to compare net returns side-by-side. This is especially useful when evaluating hedge fund manager proposals.

This template calculates a single year. To model multi-year scenarios, copy the Calculator sheet for each year and link the ending AUM of year N to the starting AUM of year N+1. You can also add columns to track cumulative fee drag over time.

Create a data table in Excel using the template's output cells. Vary gross return from -20% to +40% in 5% increments to see how net returns and fee drag change across different market scenarios. This reveals where fee structures become most punitive.
