About This Template

Analyze leveraged loan economics with precision. This Excel template calculates all-in yields for floating-rate leveraged loans, accounting for SOFR floors, original issue discount (OID) amortization, and upfront fee economics. Whether you are evaluating primary issuance opportunities or secondary market purchases, this spreadsheet provides the yield metrics you need.

What You Can Calculate

The template produces key yield metrics for leveraged loan analysis:

  • Effective SOFR - The higher of actual SOFR or the contractual floor rate
  • Coupon Rate - Effective SOFR plus the stated credit spread
  • All-In Spread - Total spread including OID and fee amortization
  • All-In Yield - Complete yield for primary investors
  • Secondary Market Yield - Yield for buyers at current market price
  • Spread Interpretation - Credit tier classification (Tighter/Typical/Wide)

Required Inputs

Enter seven parameters to model any leveraged loan:

  • Stated Spread - Credit spread over SOFR in basis points (50-1500 bps)
  • Current SOFR - Current benchmark rate (0-15%)
  • SOFR Floor - Minimum benchmark for coupon calculation (0-5%)
  • Issue Price - Original issue price as percent of par (85-100%)
  • Current Price - Secondary market price (50-105% of par)
  • Expected Average Life - Weighted average life in years (0.5-10 years)
  • Upfront Fee - Investor fee received at closing (0-5%)

Methodology

The calculator uses industry-standard formulas for leveraged loan yield analysis. OID and fees are amortized linearly over the expected average life, converting price discounts and fees into annualized basis point equivalents. The SOFR floor mechanism uses MAX(SOFR, Floor) to determine the effective benchmark rate, protecting lenders in low-rate environments.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Linear amortization of OID and fees (simplified approximation)
  • Single static SOFR input (no multi-period reset modeling)
  • No prepayment penalty or call premium adjustment
  • Secondary yield excludes original issue economics
  • For educational purposes - yields are approximations

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Duplicate the Calculator sheet tab to create side-by-side comparisons of different loans. Each sheet operates independently with its own inputs and formulas, letting you evaluate multiple opportunities.

Change the Current SOFR input to test how yields respond to rising or falling rates. Try values above and below the SOFR Floor to see when the floor becomes active and protects the coupon rate.
