About This Template
Calculate your federal income tax, FICA, and retirement contribution savings with this professional Excel template. The Marginal Tax Rate Calculator Excel Template includes 2025 federal tax brackets for all four filing statuses, making it easy to estimate your tax liability and plan your finances.
What You Can Calculate
This template computes all the key tax metrics you need:
- Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) - Your income after above-the-line deductions
- Taxable Income - AGI minus your standard or itemized deduction
- Federal Income Tax - Calculated using progressive 2025 brackets
- Marginal Tax Rate - The rate on your last dollar of income
- Effective Tax Rate - Your true average federal tax rate
- FICA Taxes - Social Security and Medicare (employee share)
- Total Tax Burden - Combined federal income tax and FICA
- Retirement Contribution Tax Savings - How much your 401(k) saves you
Required Inputs
Simply enter your:
- Filing Status - Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, or Head of Household
- Gross Income - Total income before deductions (W-2, 1099, etc.)
- Deduction Type - Standard or Itemized
- Pre-Tax Retirement Contributions - 401(k), 403(b), Traditional IRA
- Other Above-the-Line Deductions - HSA, student loan interest, etc.
Methodology
The template uses the official 2025 IRS tax brackets with progressive rate calculation. Each bracket rate applies only to income within that range, not your entire income. FICA is calculated at employee rates: 6.2% Social Security (capped at $176,100) plus 1.45% Medicare.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Uses 2025 federal tax brackets only (no state/local taxes)
- Assumes ordinary income (W-2 wages)
- Does not include AMT, NIIT, or tax credits
- Standard deductions for filers under 65
- For educational purposes - not tax advice
