What You Can Calculate
This template calculates five key metrics from your investment cash flows:
- Money-Weighted Return (IRR) - The discount rate that makes your net present value zero
- NPV at IRR - Verification that the IRR solution is correct
- Total Invested - Sum of all your capital contributions
- Total Returned - Sum of all withdrawals and final value
- Net Profit/Loss - Your absolute dollar gain or loss
Frequently Asked Questions
Unprotect the Calculator sheet, then insert new rows for additional cash flows. Important: You must also extend the cell ranges in ALL formulas - not just IRR, but also NPV at IRR, Total Invested, Total Returned, and the warning conditions. Each formula references B6:B15 by default.
This template assumes equal-interval periods. For irregular dates, add a column of actual dates next to your cash flows, then replace IRR(range) with XIRR(values, dates). XIRR requires both a values array and a dates array to calculate the annualized return.
Brokers typically report time-weighted returns (TWR), which may differ from your IRR. This template calculates money-weighted return, which reflects your actual dollar experience. Compare both to understand if your timing helped or hurt performance.
