About This Template

Calculate z-scores, cumulative probabilities, and percentile values with this Normal Distribution Probability Calculator Excel template. Whether you need to standardize values, find tail probabilities, or determine critical values for hypothesis testing, this spreadsheet handles all common normal distribution calculations in one place.

What You Can Calculate

This template provides eight key outputs organized into three calculation groups:

  • Z-Score and Single-Point Probabilities - Convert any value to its z-score, then find the left-tail probability P(X โ‰ค x) or right-tail probability P(X > x)
  • Between Probability - Calculate P(a โ‰ค X โ‰ค b) for any range, with automatic bound-swapping if you enter them in the wrong order
  • Inverse Normal - Find the value corresponding to any percentile (e.g., the 95th percentile for VaR calculations)

Required Inputs

Enter your distribution parameters and the values you want to analyze:

  • Mean (ฮผ) - The center of your distribution (use 0 for standard normal)
  • Standard Deviation (ฯƒ) - The spread of your distribution (use 1 for standard normal)
  • Value (x) - For z-score and probability calculations
  • Lower/Upper Bounds - For between probability calculations
  • Probability (p) - For inverse normal calculations (enter as decimal, e.g., 0.95)

Methodology

All calculations use Excel's built-in NORMSDIST and NORMSINV functions, which implement the standard normal cumulative distribution function ฮฆ(z) and its inverse. The z-score formula z = (x - ฮผ) / ฯƒ standardizes values, while probability calculations use the relationship P(X โ‰ค x) = ฮฆ((x - ฮผ) / ฯƒ).

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Data must follow a normal (Gaussian) distribution
  • Population parameters are assumed known or accurately estimated
  • Financial returns often exhibit fat tails - the normal assumption may underestimate extreme events

Frequently Asked Questions

This template calculates z-scores, left-tail and right-tail probabilities, between probabilities for a range, and inverse normal values (percentile to x). All calculations use the standard normal distribution functions (NORMSDIST and NORMSINV) built into Excel.

Enter your mean, standard deviation, and desired probability (p) in the inputs. The Inverse Value (x) output shows the value at that percentile. For example, with mean=100, standard deviation=15, and p=0.95, you get the 95th percentile. This is useful for VaR thresholds, confidence interval bounds, and critical values.

The formulas automatically swap the lower and upper bounds if you enter them in the wrong order (a > b). This ensures the between probability always gives a positive result. The z_lower and z_upper outputs show the corrected values when swapping occurs.
