About This Template

Calculate all five components of defined benefit pension expense with this ready-to-use Excel template. Built for accounting professionals, finance students, and HR teams analyzing pension plan costs under ASC 715 (US GAAP).

What You Can Calculate

This template computes the complete pension expense breakdown plus funded status metrics:

  • Interest Cost - Time value unwinding of the projected benefit obligation
  • Expected Return on Assets - Reduces expense based on long-term return assumptions
  • Corridor Amortization - Calculates excess actuarial losses subject to amortization
  • Total Pension Expense - Sum of all five ASC 715 components
  • Funded Status & Ratio - Plan assets vs. PBO with underfunding alerts

Required Inputs

Enter 11 values from your pension plan data:

  • Beginning PBO and Plan Assets (from prior year actuarial report)
  • Service Cost (current period accrual from actuary)
  • Discount Rate and Expected Return Rate
  • Actual Return, Contributions, and Benefits Paid
  • Prior Service Cost Amortization and Net Loss/Gain position
  • Average Remaining Service Life of active employees

Methodology

The template implements the ASC 715 corridor approach for actuarial gain/loss recognition. The corridor equals 10% of the greater of Beginning PBO or Plan Assets. Only the net loss (or gain) exceeding this threshold is amortized over the average remaining service life of employees.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Uses fair value as market-related value for plan assets
  • Annual period convention (adapt inputs for interim periods)
  • No settlements, curtailments, or mid-year plan amendments modeled
  • PBO rollforward simplified: Beg PBO + Service Cost + Interest - Benefits Paid

The template assumes annual inputs. For quarterly analysis, input period-specific values (quarterly service cost, actual return, contributions, benefits paid) and annualize rates if needed. The formulas will calculate the corresponding period's expense.
