About This Template

Analyze your portfolio's performance with professional-grade attribution analysis. This Performance Attribution Calculator Excel template uses the industry-standard Brinson-Fachler three-effect decomposition model to break down your active return into allocation, selection, and interaction effects โ€” the same methodology used by institutional portfolio managers and CFA charterholders.

What You Can Calculate

The template automatically computes key attribution metrics for up to 10 asset sectors:

  • Portfolio and Benchmark Returns โ€” Weighted average returns based on your sector allocations
  • Active Return โ€” The difference between portfolio and benchmark performance
  • Allocation Effect โ€” Value added (or lost) from over/underweighting sectors that outperformed the benchmark
  • Selection Effect โ€” Value from picking securities that outperformed their sector benchmarks
  • Interaction Effect โ€” Combined benefit when allocation and selection decisions reinforce each other
  • Per-sector breakdown โ€” See exactly which sectors contributed to or detracted from performance

Required Inputs

For each sector in your analysis, you'll need:

  • Portfolio weight (%) โ€” your actual allocation to each sector
  • Benchmark weight (%) โ€” the benchmark's allocation to each sector
  • Portfolio return (%) โ€” your realized return in each sector
  • Benchmark return (%) โ€” the benchmark's return in each sector

Weights should sum to 100% for both portfolio and benchmark. The template validates this and shows warnings if weights don't balance.

Methodology

The template implements the Brinson-Fachler model (BKM "Investments" Chapter 24):

  • Allocation Effect: (wp - wb) ร— (Rb,sector - Rb,total)
  • Selection Effect: wb ร— (Rp,sector - Rb,sector)
  • Interaction Effect: (wp - wb) ร— (Rp,sector - Rb,sector)

The three effects sum exactly to the active return, providing a complete decomposition of portfolio performance.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Single-period analysis (no multi-period compounding)
  • Assumes fully invested portfolios (weights sum to 100%)
  • No transaction costs or taxes modeled
  • Sectors must be mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive

Frequently Asked Questions

The template supports up to 10 sectors. Rows 5-10 are initially hidden in a grouped row set. Click the + expand button in the row header area (left of column A) to reveal the additional sector rows, then change the Number of Active Sectors dropdown to include them in calculations.

Both portfolio and benchmark weights should sum to 100%. The template displays running totals in the Weight Totals row, and warnings appear if the sums deviate by more than 0.5%. Results are still calculated, but attribution effects may not reconcile properly.

This template performs single-period Brinson-Fachler attribution only. For multi-period analysis with geometric linking, you would need to run separate analyses per period and combine using a linking methodology (e.g., Carino or GRAP). The formulas are fully visible and editable if you want to extend the model.
