About This Template

Determine when your portfolio needs rebalancing with this professional Portfolio Rebalancing Calculator Excel template. Built for portfolio managers, financial advisors, and individual investors, this spreadsheet implements corridor-based rebalancing to help you maintain your target asset allocation while minimizing unnecessary trading costs.

What You Can Calculate

This template provides comprehensive rebalancing analysis for up to 10 asset classes:

  • Drift Analysis โ€” See exactly how far each asset has moved from its target weight
  • Corridor Status โ€” Instant identification of which assets have breached their rebalancing thresholds
  • Trade Requirements โ€” Dollar amounts needed to restore each asset to target weight
  • Transaction Costs โ€” Estimated total cost of rebalancing based on your specified cost rates
  • Portfolio Turnover โ€” Percentage of portfolio that would be traded in a full reset

Required Inputs

Enter your portfolio details in the blue input cells:

  • Portfolio Value โ€” Total market value of your portfolio
  • Target Weights โ€” Your strategic asset allocation targets (must sum to 100%)
  • Current Weights โ€” Actual current allocation (must sum to 100%)
  • Corridor Width โ€” Allowable deviation before triggering rebalancing (typically 3-5%)
  • Transaction Cost Rate โ€” One-way trading cost for each asset class

Methodology

The template uses corridor-based rebalancing with strict inequality bounds. An asset is "Outside" its corridor when: Current Weight โ‰ค (Target - Corridor) or Current Weight โ‰ฅ (Target + Corridor). When any asset breaches its corridor, the model calculates trades required to restore all assets to exact target weights. Turnover is calculated as the sum of absolute trade values divided by twice the portfolio value.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Full-reset rebalancing policy (all assets return to exact targets)
  • Transaction costs are one-way (applied to absolute trade value)
  • No tax considerations or wash sale rules modeled
  • Assumes immediate execution at current weights

Frequently Asked Questions

Rebalancing is triggered when ANY asset breaches its corridor bounds. The model uses strict inequality u2014 if an asset's current weight equals its upper or lower bound exactly, it's considered 'Outside' the corridor and rebalancing is triggered.

The template assumes a full-reset policy: when rebalancing is triggered, all assets are returned to their exact target weights. Calendar-based or partial rebalancing policies are not modeled.

Turnover equals the sum of absolute trade values divided by twice the portfolio value. This convention counts a buy-and-sell as 100% turnover, so a round-trip rebalance that trades 10% of the portfolio shows 10% turnover.
