About This Template

Calculate real exchange rates, PPP implied rates, and currency misalignment with this professional Real Exchange Rate Calculator Excel template. Whether you're an economics student, international finance professional, or researcher analyzing currency valuations, this spreadsheet provides the analytical framework you need.

What You Can Calculate

This template computes six key metrics for currency analysis:

  • Real Exchange Rate (RER) - The purchasing power-adjusted exchange rate that reveals whether domestic goods are relatively expensive or cheap compared to foreign goods
  • PPP Implied Rate - The theoretical exchange rate where purchasing power parity would hold exactly
  • Currency Misalignment - The percentage deviation from PPP equilibrium, indicating overvaluation or undervaluation
  • RER Interpretation - Plain-English explanation of what your results mean
  • Currency Status - Classification as Fairly Valued, Overvalued, or Undervalued
  • Export Competitiveness - Assessment of trade competitiveness implications

Required Inputs

Enter just four values to generate your analysis:

  • Quote Convention - Choose Direct (foreign per domestic) or Indirect (domestic per foreign) to match your data source
  • Nominal Exchange Rate - The current market exchange rate between your currency pair
  • Domestic Price Level - Price index for the home country (use OECD price levels or comparable indices)
  • Foreign Price Level - Price index for the foreign country (must use same measure as domestic)

Methodology

The template implements standard PPP calculations used in international economics:

  • Direct Convention: RER = e x (P_domestic / P_foreign)
  • Indirect Convention: RER = P_domestic / (e x P_foreign)
  • Misalignment: (RER - 1) x 100%

Key Assumptions

  • Law of one price holds approximately for comparable goods baskets
  • PPP is a long-run equilibrium concept - short-run deviations are normal
  • Price levels must be from comparable indices (not raw domestic CPI)
  • Does not model Balassa-Samuelson effects or non-traded goods

Frequently Asked Questions

The template is designed for one currency pair at a time. To compare multiple pairs, duplicate the Calculator sheet (right-click tab > Move or Copy > check Create a copy) and rename each copy for different country pairs. All formulas will carry over.

Unlike the online calculator which auto-converts rates, this Excel template requires you to manually enter the reciprocal rate when switching conventions. This gives you full control over your data and lets you verify the conversion. For example, switching from direct 0.90 to indirect requires entering 1.1111 (= 1/0.90).

Use Excel Data Table feature (Data > What-If Analysis > Data Table) to test how RER and misalignment change across a range of exchange rates or price levels. You can also link the inputs to external data sources using VLOOKUP or Power Query for dynamic analysis.
