About This Template

Model repurchase agreement interest, implied rates, and collateral haircuts with this Repo Rate Calculator Excel template. Whether you are pricing an overnight repo, evaluating a term funding arrangement, or sizing margin requirements, this spreadsheet gives you a portable, formula-driven workspace you can save, share, and customize.

What You Can Calculate

The template computes five key outputs simultaneously across three result groups:

  • Repo Interest โ€” the dollar cost of borrowing for the specified term, using Actual/360 day count.
  • Repurchase Price โ€” the total amount the borrower repays at maturity (principal plus interest).
  • Implied Repo Rate โ€” the annualized rate derived from a known sale price and repurchase price, useful for comparing quoted terms to other money-market benchmarks.
  • Haircut Amount โ€” the dollar value of the margin deducted from collateral.
  • Maximum Borrowing โ€” the loan capacity remaining after the haircut is applied.

Required Inputs

Enter six values to drive all calculations:

  • Principal Amount (Sale Price) โ€” the initial transaction size (default: $10,000,000).
  • Repo Rate โ€” annualized interest rate, typically between 0% and 25%.
  • Term (Days) โ€” 1 for overnight repos, or the actual term length up to 365 days.
  • Repurchase Price โ€” the agreed buyback price (used for implied-rate calculations).
  • Collateral Value โ€” current market value of pledged securities.
  • Haircut Rate โ€” percentage discount applied to collateral (typical range 0.5%โ€“10%).

Methodology

Interest is calculated as Principal ร— (Rate / 100) ร— (Days / 360), following the Actual/360 convention standard for U.S. money-market instruments including repos, T-bills, and commercial paper. The implied rate reverses this relationship to solve for the annualized rate embedded in two known prices.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Actual/360 day count convention (money-market standard).
  • Simple interest โ€” no compounding within the repo term.
  • Haircut applied to current market value of collateral.
  • No transaction costs, margin calls, or substitution rights modeled.
  • For educational purposes only โ€” not financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Save multiple copies of the template or use different rows to compare terms. Enter each offeru0027s principal, rate, and term to see the total interest cost, then compare implied rates if working backward from quoted prices.

Change the Term (Days) input. Enter 1 for overnight repos, or the actual number of days for term repos (e.g., 7, 14, 30). The template calculates interest using Actual/360 day count convention for any term length.

Enter the market value of your collateral and the haircut percentage. The template calculates both the dollar haircut amount and maximum borrowing capacity. Haircut calculations are independent of the repo rate calculations, so you can model different collateral scenarios without affecting interest results.
