About This Template

Model short call option positions with precision using this free Excel template. Whether you are selling calls for income or analyzing uncovered options strategies, this Short Call Calculator Excel template gives you Black-Scholes pricing, entry credit calculations, and breakeven analysis in an editable spreadsheet format.

What You Can Calculate

This template computes all the key metrics for a naked (uncovered) short call position:

  • Call Premium - Theoretical option price per share using the Black-Scholes model with dividend yield adjustment
  • Entry Credit - Total premium received (per share x 100 x contracts)
  • Max Profit - Limited to the premium received when the option expires worthless
  • Max Loss - Displayed as Unlimited since the stock can rise indefinitely
  • Breakeven Price - The stock price at expiration where P/L equals zero
  • Move to Breakeven - Percentage move required from current price to breakeven

Required Inputs

Enter these values in the blue input cells:

  • Stock Price - Current market price of the underlying
  • Strike Price - The strike of the call you are selling
  • Days to Expiration - Calendar days until expiration (1-1825)
  • Implied Volatility - Annualized IV as a percentage (1-300%)
  • Risk-Free Rate - Treasury rate, typically 4-5%
  • Dividend Yield - Annualized continuous yield (0% for non-dividend stocks)
  • Contracts - Number of call contracts to sell

Methodology

The template uses the Black-Scholes option pricing model extended for continuous dividend yield. All formulas are visible and editable in the spreadsheet.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • IV-only mode - this template computes premium via Black-Scholes (no manual premium entry)
  • European-style exercise assumed
  • Constant implied volatility and risk-free rate
  • Continuous dividend yield (not discrete dividends)
  • Models uncovered (naked) short calls only - not covered calls

Frequently Asked Questions

This template is IV-only by design. It uses Black-Scholes to compute the theoretical call premium from implied volatility. If you already know the premium you received, you can overwrite the call premium cell with your known value.

No. This template models an uncovered (naked) short call where you do not own the underlying shares. A covered call has a different risk profile. We have a separate Covered Call Calculator Excel template for that strategy.

A naked short call has theoretically unlimited loss because the stock price can rise indefinitely. Unlike max profit (which equals the premium received), there is no finite max loss value to calculate.
