About This Template

Download this Short Put Calculator Excel template to analyze short put option positions before you trade. Enter the stock price, strike price, and premium you receive, and instantly see your entry credit, breakeven price, maximum profit, and worst-case loss.

What You Can Calculate

This spreadsheet calculates the essential metrics for evaluating short put trades:

  • Entry Credit - Total premium received upfront (your immediate cash inflow)
  • Maximum Profit - The most you can earn, equal to the entry credit when the put expires worthless
  • Maximum Loss - Worst-case scenario if the stock falls to zero
  • Breakeven Price - Stock price at expiration where you neither profit nor lose
  • Move to Breakeven - Percentage the stock needs to move to reach your breakeven
  • Risk/Reward Ratio - Compares potential loss to potential gain for position sizing

Required Inputs

You need four values to run the analysis:

  • Stock Price - Current market price of the underlying stock
  • Strike Price - The price at which you may be obligated to buy shares
  • Put Premium - Premium received per share (from your broker quote)
  • Number of Contracts - How many puts you are selling (each = 100 shares)

Methodology

The template uses standard options payoff formulas. Your entry credit equals premium times 100 times contracts. Your breakeven is the strike minus the premium per share. Maximum loss assumes the stock falls to zero, requiring you to buy worthless shares at the strike price, offset only by the premium you collected.

Assumptions

  • Premium mode only (enter market premium directly; use the online calculator for Black-Scholes IV pricing)
  • Hold-to-expiration payoff analysis; early assignment timing not modeled
  • No transaction costs, commissions, or assignment fees included
  • Each contract represents 100 shares

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter your broker's quoted premium per share, the strike price you're considering, and the current stock price. The template instantly calculates your entry credit, breakeven price, and worst-case loss. Compare the risk/reward ratio across different strikes to find the best fit for your risk tolerance.

Black-Scholes requires complex calculations (normal distributions, exponentials) that would make the spreadsheet harder to audit and modify. Instead, enter the market premium from your broker or use the online calculator's IV mode to estimate fair value, then input that premium here for P/L analysis.

The template calculates one position at a time. To compare scenarios (different strikes, premiums, or quantities), save copies of the workbook with different inputs, or create additional rows in the Calculator sheet by copying the formula structure.
