About This Template
Compare Current Rate vs Temporal translation methods with this interactive Excel template. Designed for finance professionals, accountants, and students studying ASC 830 / IAS 21 foreign currency translation, this calculator helps you understand how different functional currency designations affect reported translation gains and losses.
What You Can Calculate
This template computes 11 key outputs across both translation methods:
- Current Rate Method โ Translated assets, liabilities, net exposed position, and CTA (Cumulative Translation Adjustment) that flows to OCI
- Temporal Method โ Translated monetary items, net monetary exposure, and remeasurement G/L that flows directly to income
- Income Statement โ Revenue, expenses, and net income translated at the average exchange rate
Required Inputs
Enter your subsidiary's financial data in foreign currency units:
- Balance sheet totals and monetary/non-monetary breakdown for assets and liabilities
- Income statement figures (revenue and expenses)
- Four exchange rates: previous period, current (closing), average, and historical
Methodology
The Current Rate method translates all assets and liabilities at the closing rate, with the translation adjustment flowing to OCI. The Temporal method translates monetary items at current rate and non-monetary items at historical rate, with remeasurement flowing to P&L. Both approaches follow ASC 830 / IAS 21 guidance based on functional currency designation.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Single-period translation model (no retained earnings rollforward)
- Simplified income statement using average rate for all items
- No hedging of net investment or remeasurement of inventory to market
Frequently Asked Questions
Monetary items are settled in cash at face value (cash, receivables, payables, debt). Non-monetary items are assets like PP&E, inventory at cost, and intangibles that do not have a fixed cash settlement. The template validates that your components sum to totals - if you see a warning, adjust until monetary + non-monetary = total for both assets and liabilities.
This template models a single-period translation. For full multi-period analysis with opening CTA balances, retained earnings rollforward, and dividend remeasurement, you would need to extend the model. You can unprotect the sheet and add columns for prior-period balances - all formulas are visible and editable.
This is a simplification for educational purposes. Full temporal method remeasurement would apply historical rates to COGS (matching inventory cost rates) and depreciation (matching PP&E acquisition rates). This template uses the average rate for all income statement items, which is appropriate for current rate method and a reasonable approximation for temporal.
